Masaya Chiba Exhibition in the Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery

The works of Chiba, who is drawing attention both in Japan and abroad as a promising young artist, will be displayed in the large space of the museum, bringing you a joyful art experience that you may want to call “Adventure” or “Unrestrained Zone”. The exhibition will be a fun and exciting art experience.

Masaya Chiba (1980-) is based in Tokyo and has participated in numerous exhibitions and group exhibitions. His works are now held in museums and by individuals in Japan and overseas, and are highly evaluated. He is also teaching young painters at an art university, and is drawing a lot of attention as a promising young painter.
Chiba’s works represent a bold approach to shake up the existing framework of contemporary art by making full use of media such as two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and video, while faithfully inheriting the various expressions and achievements in painting in the East and West.

A unique world where fictional landscapes are expressed with rich reality.
Chiba’s paintings include motifs he created himself with paper clay and pieces of wood, depicting provisional (i.e. fictional) landscapes arranged with everyday objects, as well as reproductions on canvas of images taken from his surroundings and past events. In each of these works, the artist’s skill in depicting the mixed texture of materials and other elements creates a unique world in which provisional landscapes are realistically expressed.

The museum’s large space is filled with works of various media, including photography, video, installation, sound art, performance, and documentation, including the “Self-Portrait” series, in which the artist draws his own face on the face of a stage actress or a taekwondo fighter, and then copies it on paper.

In the exhibition hall, 91 artworks and more than 10 drawings and reference videos are displayed along a “flow” covered with wood chips. At first glance, the arrangement of the works may seem random, but if you look closely, you will find that the relationships between the works have been thought out with great precision.

In addition, the wood chip “flow” continues from the entrance to the exit, with images of Chiba’s past and daily life, so that you feel as if you are peeking into his private timeline.
In particular, the appearance of Chiba’s pet turtle is another reason to feel that way. The turtle will lean its head back in the warm light of the tank and look at you with a pleasant expression.
