Yu-yu, Ei-ei: A Two-Person Exhibition by AMURA Mikoto and MIYAZAKI Shoko at Gallery Dalston

Although the two artists have different styles of expression, the worldviews of their works create a harmonious chemistry within the gallery space, as their motifs are based on what they experience in their daily lives.
“Yu-yu, Ei-ei” is a coined word derived from the Japanese word “yu-ei,” which sounds like an onomatopoeia. The word “yu-ei” means to swim—not just in the literal sense, but to swim as if playing freely. The title of this exhibition evokes a sense of a free and comfortable worldview prevailing in the gallery.
For those of us living in the bustling city of Tokyo, it can sometimes seem difficult to make each day count and live at our own pace. However, if you discover something wonderful at this exhibition, tomorrow might just be a little more enjoyable.

[Concept]
I draw things from the past that I suddenly remember, trivial events that happened in my daily life, and scenes of moments when I gained small realizations. By drawing time that has flowed inside me or around my body as if it were overlaid on top of it, I attempt to draw on the canvas on the time that passes through the recalled memories, and the physical and mental distance between the mind, body, and place.

[Statement]
Before expressing or conveying something, I create works simply as an act of drawing, of leaving something behind. I think it is important that the painting is there simply as a trace of what was drawn, without attaching any unnecessary meaning to the act of drawing or showing what was drawn. I want to create a work that is separate from my own intentions, without intervening in the thoughts and emotions of the moment of drawing.
